Hunt said in a statement, "A rigorous, open and thorough environmental assessment process was undertaken to take account of the public interest in the project.

"I have also visited the proposed site to better understand the project and met with the local community to understand their views."

The Carmichael coal mine and rail infrastructure project was approved, subject to 36 strict conditions, which complement the conditions imposed by the Queensland Government.

The conditions are said to ensure the proponent complies with environmental standards and impacts, including cumulative impacts, are alleviated.

They include returning a minimum of 730 megalitres of water to the Great Artesian Basin every year for five years, monitor groundwater changes, manage uncleared habitat to address potential subsidence impacts and contribute funding to address cumulative impacts to threatened species and communities.

Adani Mining secured approval from the state of Queensland in May; however, it is facing challenges from green groups and marine tour operators concerned over possible carbon pollution and impact on ground water supply in the region.

Carmichael has a lifetime resource value of at least $300bn. It will create around 2,475 construction jobs and 3,920 jobs during the operations.

The project is expected to add $930m to the Mackay region’s gross regional product and $2.97bn to the Queensland economy each year.
