The plants will increase transmission capacity around the Saudi Arabia capital, Riyadh, and surrounding areas of the Central Region.

Under the deal, ABB will supply generator step-up (GSU) transformers, power transformers and station service transformers for SEC’s power plants.

The transformer portfolio of ABB includes power transformers rated up to 1,200kV, dry- and liquid-distribution transformers, traction and special application transformers as well as related services and components.

ABB power products division head Bernhard Jucker said the transformers will allow more electricity to reach consumers and meet increasing industrial and household demand in the region.

"We are pleased to continue supporting Saudi Arabia in the development of its power infrastructure."

Saudi Arabia aims to increase power-generation capacity by over 50% from less than 60GW to about 91GW by 2020.
