Under the deal, Alstom will apply the patented Amstar 888 solution on a total surface area of about 130m² in the boiler that started operations in 1976.

The move will protect the evaporator walls of the 724MW boiler from corrosion by reduced oxygen potential.

The planned outage, which began in June 2014, will last for four weeks and Alstom will undertake the application of AmStar 888 within a period of slightly over a week.

Alstom said the application of AmStar 888 corrosion protection can significantly extend the service life of pressure parts.

Alstom Power head of boiler service in Stuttgart Armin Fieber said, "As a leading manufacturer and service provider of pulverized coal boilers, Alstom offers its customers an efficient coating procedure known as the high-speed arc spraying procedure with the AmStar 888 solution."

STEAG Weiher power plant head of plant engineering Bernhard Jochum said unscheduled downtimes have a negative impact on availability and cause an increase in maintenance costs.

"As a power plant operator, we endeavour to optimise operational costs in all areas. For this reason, we opted for the tried-and-tested corrosion protection from Alstom," Jochum added.
