“We will complete our 2D (two dimensional) survey within a couple of days and we have already requested the Petrobnagla to start the work of land acquisition and other related issues as we are planning to drill an exploratory well there by next winter (2010),” an official told media.

According to the Petrobangla, Chevron will develop the drilling location along with access roads, storage sites and other amenities in between February-August 2010 and if every thing goes on well, the company would go for drilling between September 2010 to April 2011, costing about $21 million.

“To conduct the drilling operations we need three to four months as we have to construct concrete drilling pit, mobilisation of drilling rigs and associated equipment, management and treatment of waste and decommissioning of rig and materials,” Chevron official said.

Chevron would drill two additional wells around that area if this drilling operation produces positive results, he added.

The company is producing around 900 mmcfd from three gas fields in Moulavibazar, Jalalabad and Bibiyana which is half of the country’s daily gas production. Chevron signed the production sharing contract (PSC) for Block- 7 in 2001 and kept it idle for a long period.

“Analyzing the data that we got from Chevron, Charkajal and Golachipa upazila of Patuakhali district are the most potential areas,” said a Petrobangla official.
