As per the new plans, the country is looking to quadruple that capacity in next 10 years, and increase it to as much as 400 GW by 2050.

Currently, China’s nuclear power plants are producing around nine GW of power which accounts for 2.7% of China’s total electricity.

The new capacity would still generate only 9.7% of the total output in 2020.

Safety concerns have surfaced because many of the new plants would be situated near cities with huge populations, the New York Times reported.

China’s safety concerns in the nuclear power industry are expected to grow as the pace picks up and additional contractors and subcontractors seek to cut costs.
