The company will now perform civil works in preparation for pouring safety concrete on the reactor containment building, auxiliary building, turbine generator building, component cooling water heat exchanger building, essential service water intake structure, and compound building.
The work will enable installation of structural features, such as formwork, rebar, embedded anchor bolts, electrical conduit, steel plates and piping.
However, the company still needs a construction license from FANR to to pour initial safety concrete for Units 3 and 4, and has already applied for the same to FANR in March 2013.
ENEC also submitted an Environmental Impact Assessment, which requires approval from The Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi.
The company is constructing four nuclear energy plants by 2020, which are expected to generate up to a quarter of the nation’s electricity supply.
Construction of the first and second Barakh units is more than 35% completed, and the units are scheduled to enter commercial operations in 2017, and 2018, respectively, pending regulatory approvals.
ENEC plans to apply for an operating license for the two units in 2015.
