Workers stopped reporting to work since Wednesday, in what is considered as a continuation of the strikes that began with Lonmin’s workers.

The mining sector is the largest contributor to the South African economy with gold mining also affected due to the strikes prevalent throughout the country for a higher wage demand.

An AngloGold spokesperson reported that workers began an unprotected strike and prevented the start of the night shift on 25 September 2012.

Striking began at the company’s Kopanang mine the previous week and has now spread to the Mponeng site, with more than 35,000 workers joining agitation.

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) spokesman Lesiba Seshoka was reported as saying that AngloGold strikers are demanding a pay hike to ZAR16,000($2,000) a month, although no formal demand has yet been made.
