The deployment of general packet radio service (GPRS) meters will begin later this month and is an extension of the ongoing initial gas and electric meter pilot project.
Itron’s advanced smart meters allow for increased communication about energy usage and automated monitoring.
Itron regional business unit manager István Biró highlighted that the automated monitoring and control will enable E.ON to serve its customers more effectively.
"This pilot GPRS meter installment in Hungary is only the preliminary step in increased efficiency in energy technology across the region," Biró added.
After installation of the smart meters at randomly selected E.ON customers, the Hungarian Energy Office has plans to use the data to evaluate consumer energy use and efficiency.
E.ON said it serves electricity to 60% of the businesses and residents across the country.
