The proposed Newark Energy Center will be located on a 23-acre brownfield site owned by Hess adjacent to its petroleum storage terminal in Newark, New Jersery.
A DEP spokesman was quoted by NJBIZ as saying the air pollution control operating permit allows the natural gas-fired plant to discharge emissions, which would be insignificant.
The project is currently undergoing a 45-day Environmental Protection Agency air operating permit review, according to a project spokeswoman.
Construction work for the project, which will create 36 permanent and 400 construction jobs, is expected to start before the end of this year.
In May 2012, the Newark Planning Board approved the power plant that will produce enough clean energy to power over 700,000 homes in the region, the company said.
