Under the program, SCE will replace traditional mechanical meters with the new electric meters and transform electric system into a smart grid.

The smart meters can be accessed on a daily basis to analyse daily energy consumption and use the information to conserve energy.

SCE Edison SmartConnect program director Ken Devore said, "Smart meters will empower our customers to become better managers of their electricity usage through new tools, programs and services that will help them save energy and money, and help protect the environment."

The company will begin installing the meters late in September 2012 and continue through December 2012.

SCE will partner with Corix Utilities to install most of the meters.
