The drop resulted from failure of a controller device that regulates the flow of water into the steam generator, which heat water to generate steam that powers turbines to make electricity.

According to the plant’s owner, Entergy Nuclear, the event did not lead to release of radioactivity and hence do not pose no threat to the safety of workers or the public.

The unit had been generating electricity for 159 continuous days before the shut down.

The Indian Point Energy Center (IPEC) features two operating nuclear power plants, unit 2 and unit 3, which generate 2000MW of electricity for homes, business and public facilities in New York City and Westchester County.
