The companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with plan to negotiate a contract for a strategic alliance, which will see the partners develop smart grid technologies for Qatar and the entire Middle East.

Siemens Smart Grid Division CEO Jan Mrosik said "The partnership will provide the company with an opportunity to understand its customers’ requirements more better."

Iberdrola Innovation, Environment and Quality director Augustin Delgado said, "This alliance is an extraordinary opportunity to introduce successful technological transfer projects to the region, while adding value for customers through the proven experience of two leaders in their respective sectors, such as Siemens and Iberdrola."

The partners intend to focus on the integration of energy from renewable sources, such as the sun and wind into smart grids, and development of systems designed to balance the supply and demand for energy, which ensures network stability, while helping utilities by eliminating the need to draw on expensive peak-load power plants.

In addition, the companies plan to cooperate in monitoring and controlling of the distribution grids.
