ETFC Chairman Ganesh Prasad Subba was quoted by ekantipur.com as saying that the committee is giving serious consideration to the proposed tariff hike.

”A committee has been formed, and we will soon be publishing a notice in the newspapers to gather feedback from consumers,” Subba added.

The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) had requested ETFC for an average tariff hike of 20% for all customers except for households consuming less than 20 units of electricity monthly, in May 2013, to help to stabilize its financial condition.

Noting that the rates will be increased following a detailed study, Subba added, ”We will also ask for the government’s approval, and if it is willing to shoulder some of the cost, the tariff hike might be nominal.”

The ETFC is also planning to hold a series of interaction programs with consumers prior to hiking tariff, which represents the second increment in one and a half years, following 20% hike in Hune 2012, according to the news agency.
