Following the blast in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which occurred at 1:30AM, 12 workers escaped while 22 were trapped and only one of them survived, Chinese state media network Xinhua reported.

The regional bureau of coal mine safety supervision said that professional coal mine rescue teams and firefighters were sent to the site.

Over the next two years, China is planning to close 2,000 small coal mines aimed to reduce pollution, according to MINING.com.
