Under the project, Essent will use the Tendril Connect cloud platform to provide data to its smart meter-enabled residential customers with web and mobile application developers from around the world.
The developers will access interval usage data from energy meters in a bid to create and test their consumer applications for the program participants using Tendril Connect APIs.
Essent will then make these applications available to participating households, who would rate the applications and offer feedback to developers.
Tendril chief technology officer Kent Dickson said this is the future of home energy management.
"It’s about harnessing the creativity of the developer community to build energy apps, offer them in an app store environment and let consumers choose the applications that best suit their needs," added Kent.
The project will officially begin later this year.
