On 25 March 2011, the European Council decided to implement a Europe-wide re-assessment of safety at nuclear power plants, in the wake of the accident that occurred in Japan at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant on 11 March 2011.
The assessment evaluates the preparedness of Loviisa power plants in case of severe accidents.
The safety assessment concludes that the design basis is proper and that the existing technical solutions and safety margins are sufficient.
Fortum intends to perform safety improvements and plant modifications within the normal power plant investment program.
The improvements include securing sea water cooling with air cooling and securing of the fuel pond cooling in case of exceptionally long lasting accident situations.
