If the commission approves the request, the bill for a typical residential customer using 1,000kWh of electricity will increase about $4 a month to $100, starting 1 January 2012.

According to the utilities, this request totals $32m or an approximate 3% overall increase, primarily reflecting rising coal prices over the past two years.

Coal prices represent the single largest component of the cost to generate electricity for Mon Power and Potomac Edison customers.
