A 5.8-magnitude quake, that hit the region last week, caused 25 casks holding nuclear waste to move from its original position.

Although the 16ft tall casks, weighing 115 tons each, were rattled by the quake there was no damage to the casks or the fuel.

NRC is currently analyzing how the nation’s 104 reactors could withstand earthquakes, floods and other disasters.

The move comes after a quake and tsunami wrecked Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi plant in March this year, reports Reuters.

A proposal of building a network of centralized dry cask storage sites where plants could take their used fuel is being considered by the U.S. government.
