The power project, called Wikinger, is the company’s first offshore wind farm in Germany and is expected to commence operation in 2016.

Wikinger is located in the northern part of an area known as Westlich Adlergrund, which has been designated by German authorities as a Priority Offshore Development Area.

Iberdrola has started applying for the permits from Bundesamt fur Seeschifffahrt und Hydrographie, the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency, to build the facility.

According to the company, this phase includes a presentation of the planned design and an environmental impact report, based on numerous studies carried out over the last 12 months.

The company said it acquired 100% of the construction rights to this offshore complex from a joint venture between DEE Deutsche Erneuerbare Energien (Deutsche Bank Group) and Ventotec (GHF-Group) in March last year.

At that time, the plant secured permits from the German government to install floating wind turbines.

Iberdrola now intends to present the final plans for the power project in early 2014 after getting the administration authorization, to begin construction work in 2015.
