Dubbed as Plant Operations Advisor (POA), the digital solution has already been deployed at one of BP’s platforms located in the Gulf of Mexico.

It will be implemented in other BP facilities worldwide next year subject to the success of the pilot.

BP Upstream Technology head Ahmed Hashmi said: “By bringing together some of the best minds at GE and BP, we were able to develop this innovative digital product and are confident that it will have a significant impact on our business.

“When fully deployed, these advanced digital technologies will change the way we work and improve the integrity and performance of our assets around the globe.”

In January, the British multinational oil and gas company joined hands with GE in a development partnership, part of which was the development of POA on the latter’s Predix operating system.

POA has been designed to assist engineering teams to come up with quick response to issues detected in real-time. The tool is claimed to prevent unplanned downtime besides improving facility reliability.

Through GE’s Predix and Asset Performance Management (APM) capabilities, POA is said to quickly integrate operational data from facilities to notify and send analytical reports to engineers to identify operational performance issues before they become critical.

GE Oil & Gas president and CEO Lorenzo Simonelli said: “We are taking a big step forward together during this time of digital transformation, deploying what we’ve co-created over the past year to drive the kind of productivity improvements that the oil and gas industry needs.

“The global deployment is expected to be the largest-scale deployment of GE’s Predix-powered APM technology to date.”

The US based digital industrial company intends to make the POA available to the industry.

Very recently, GE enhanced its Predix-based digital power plant software to improve protection against failure modes in gas, nuclear and steam plants, among other benefits.
