Poland, on earlier occasion sold EUR25 million in AAUs to Spain in November 2009.

“In one or two weeks at most we will sign such a contract with Ireland. Together with the one already signed with Spain, they will be worth 40 million euros,” said Nowicki.

Poland has about 500 million tons of carbon dioxide equivalent of AAUs surplus as many polluting industries have shut down in the country since 1989. The country also expects to sell permits to Japan.

Nowicki said that the country will spend money raised from the AAUs only on programs to cut greenhouse gas emissions such as those investing in renewable energy sources, energy efficiency and clean-coal technology.

Nowicki added that Poland still derives much of its energy from coal, may sell more than $363 million of carbon emission permits by the end of 2010.
