The campaigners group claims that the government has not consulted the public as per standards required by European law and that assessments did not examine alternatives to a coal-fuelled power station.

According to the group, the proposed coal fired power plant would have an adverse impact on the local environment. The Hunterston power station was a late addition to the Scottish government’s National Planning Framework.

The coal fired plant will be build by Ayrshire Power, a new company that has been formed by Peel Energy and Denmark-based DONG Energy. According to BBC news, the proposed plant would be located next to British Energy’s nuclear power plant, which is expected to close down by 2016.

A Scottish government spokesman said to The Scotsman: “The National Planning Framework has been subject to wide-ranging consultation, followed by a period of extensive parliamentary scrutiny. Projects designated as national developments in the NPF will still require planning permission or equivalent consents.”
