Mr. Saade said to Reuters that: “The coal we will mine is intended primarily to supply our power plants. We estimate we need three million tonnes a year of coal for the three plants under construction. If we find we have more production of coal than we need, we are definitely looking to place this coal in the export market as well as building more plants.”

The company intends to produce coal for its power plants in Brazil and Chile and will export the surplus. MPX has three coal-fired power plants under construction in Brazil and some other projects under development in Brazil and Chile.

Recently, the company has confirmed the existence of 110 million tonnes of thermal-coal resources in La Guajira, Colombia.

The resource estimate was based on a drilling campaign that covered 320 hectars. MPX Colombia holds mining rights over a total of 65,000 hectars in the La Guajira district.
