The coal power plant, with a capacity of 1,000MW, will be located in the eastern port city of Trincomalee. According to the Power and Energy Ministry of Sri Lanka, the project will be carried out in two phases and the first is likely to be completed by 2012.

John Seneviratne, Minister of Power and Energy of Sri Lanka, told Reuters: “We are going to sign the commercial and power-purchasing agreements next week with India’s National Thermal Power Corporation.”

As per media reports, both the parties are expected to initially invest $75m each and later $350m would be invested by them.
