The converter station is said to transform electricity to make it suitable for transmission through underground and undersea cables. The cables have the ability to carry electricity in both directions, and the station is expected to transform electricity coming from Ireland, in order to meet the technical requirements of the UK’s high voltage grid network.

Eirgrid, which is developing the East West Interconnector, said that the project will prove beneficial to electricity consumers on both sides of the Irish Sea and will allow access to a new energy market in Ireland, especially renewable energy.

The project is anticipated to help ensure secure energy supplies for Ireland in the future.

“We anticipate that now planning permission has been granted in Wales we will be able to begin work on the converter station. Prior to our planning application, extensive consultations as well as comprehensive environmental and technical assessments were undertaken to ensure the chosen site was feasible,” reported the website quoting John Fitzgerald, project director of EirGrid’s East West Interconnector.
