The nuclear power plant will be constructed in Yiyang City, Hunan. According to Hunan government, the province is in need of energy sources like nuclear power to support local economic growth as it has already utilized 90% of its hydropower resources and lacks coal and crude oil.
Hunan is planning to construct two other nuclear power plants, the Xiaomoshan Nuclear Power Plant and the Chenzhou Nuclear Power Plant. Sun Qin, deputy director of China’s National Energy Agency, promised strong government support to ensure the power plant starts operation on schedule.
