“Those compounds would then be either transferred to the applicable NFS customer or used in other NFS lines to process fuel for commercial nuclear use,” NRC said.
NRC spokesman Joey Ledford said, uranium hexafluoride is solid at room temperature but becomes a gas when heated for processing.
In May 2009, NRC has given NFS and an amendment to its special nuclear materials license and in June 2009 it had conducted an operational readiness inspection of the new production line.
On July 22, 2009 NRC inspectors had held a public exit meeting with NFS officials during which the NRC noted that all problems with the new production facility had been solved to the agency’s satisfaction.
