While many wastewater treatment plants have made security improvements since 9/11, these essential facilities are often among the most vulnerable parts of our nation’s critical infrastructure, SIA Director of Government Relations Don Erickson said. Other places get more attention and security funding, but having a treatment plant rendered inoperable would be disastrous for a community. Wastewater treatment plants provide critical services to millions of Americans and thousands of businesses, and the federal government should strengthen its commitment to their security. We are happy to support Congresswoman Johnson’s bill, and we will do our best to work toward its passage.

The new legislation awaits action by the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.
