The EXIM bank is awaiting EPC tender process to complete before it releases the fund, said by an official at the Ethiopian Electric Power Corporation (EEPCo) to Capital Ethiopia.
Elc Electroconsult is consulting on the Gilgel Gibe II hydroelectric power project, which is the continuation of Gilgel Gibe I. The Gilgel Gibe II hydroelectric power project is likely to produce the power within a few weeks, as is Tekeze.
As per the feasibility study, the Chemoga Yeda project will consists of two stages. When the project is completed, it will produce 278 megawatts (MW) of electricity. Chemoga-Yeda Rivers streams throughout the year and is one of the tributaries of the Abay, the Blue Nile.
Currently, EEPCo is building over five hydroelectric power stations in different parts of the country. Out of these, two are in the final stages.
Both hydroelectric power projects are dependent on July 2009 rains to begin generating power. The two projects are expected to produce around 90% of the current total.
Currently, EEPCo is producing around 800 MW from its hydropower plants and diesel generators. But alone the two hydro power projects will produce 720 MW.
Recently, EEPCo intends to build ten hydropower plants in the next ten years with an estimated investment of $13.1 billion.
Fan, with a capacity of generating 100 MW, Hallele-Werabessa 422-MW, Tekeze II 450-MW, Gibe IV 1900-MW, Genale III 258-MW, Genale IV 256-MW, Geba I & II 366-MW, Karadobi 1600-MW, Boarder 1200-MW, and Mendaya 2000-MW, are planned to be constructed under the EEPCo’s 25 year master plan.
