The agreement concerns Cogas Energie’s electricity and gas supply activities, and the Belgian group, which is part of the wider Suez entity, will supply the company’s 180,000 customers from October 1, 2006.

The acquisition of Cogas’ supply business follows just days after Electrabel acquired another Dutch supply company, Rendo Energie. Rendo supplies some 200,000 accountholders in the Netherlands.

According to Jean-Pierre Hansen, Electrabel’s CEO, Electrabel is the Netherlands’ largest power generator with generation facilities consisting of 13 plants and a total capacity of 4,710MW. As regards energy supply, so far we have mainly been active in the business segment.

The takeover of Rendo Energie means that Electrabel can better balance its activities in the Netherlands in order to strengthen its position as a supplier and gain a foothold on the residential market.

The Rendo agreement is worth E66.5 million. No further details of the Cogas buy were forthcoming.
