For the wind farm, Iberdrola has selected Adwen to supply its 5MW AD5-135 offshore wind turbines. The total cost of the wind farm is estimated to be €1.4bn and is capable of supplying 20% of electricity needs of the German state of Mecklenburg Vorpommern.

The turbine installation was carried on by Adwen and Fred. Olsen Windcarrier.

Wikinger wind farm, which is spread across in an area of 34km2, can generate enough clean energy to be supplied to 350,000 German households, while avoiding 600,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions into the atmosphere per year.

Iberdrola stated that Adwen’s 5MW turbines have been the largest turbines that it has installed till date and these were manufactured in Bremerhaven and Stade, Germany.

Each of the turbine’s nacelle is 222 tons and each rotor has a diameter of 443ft with 254ft long blades and the turbines are assembled on a tower which is 246ft high.

Iberdrola claims that the construction phase has created around 2000 jobs including the ones at the port of Mukran and the factories where all the components were manufactured, mainly in Germany, Denmark and Spain.

The final cable laying work is being taken care of by the German transmission system operator 50Hertz, connecting the offshore wind farm to the mainland.

Presently, Iberdrola has the 389MW West of Duddon Sands (WoDS) offshore wind farm in operation since 2014 in the UK. It has also started the construction of the 714MW East Anglia One (EAO) in the British North Sea. The facility is being build with an investment of £2.5bn.
