Access Zambia Wind One, a subsidiary of Access Power is the grantee which develops wind power projects.
According to the USTDA, Access Zambia will competitively choose an American company to complete the feasibility study of the wind project.
The Zambian wind farm scheduled to be completed in 2019 is touted to be the first wind independent power production project in the African country. It is anticipated to cover the growing demand for electricity in Zambia.
USTDA Acting Director Thomas R. Hardy said: “USTDA is pleased to support this important project that will help diversify Zambia’s energy generation mix.
“The project will create opportunities for U.S. exports in a new and growing sector in Zambia.”
The new Zambian wind power project will be owned and operated by Access Power and its partner EREN Renewable Energy. It is hoped to increase the power generation in Zambia by 6% while playing a role in reducing load shedding in the country.
Access managing director Vahid Fotuhi said: “By bringing this pioneering project to fruition with the support of USTDA we aim to diversify Zambia’s energy mix and tap into its vast clean energy power generation potential in order to help fuel its economic development and satisfy the urgent need for electrification.”
Upon completion, the Zambian wind farm is estimated to generate around 500GWh of clean electricity and is being talked about becoming one of the largest renewable energy projects to be built in Sub-Saharan Africa.
