The PV plant was built by First Solar for Southern Company and Turner Renewable Energy. Currently, First Solar is providing operations and maintenance services for the plant.

The plant, which is expected to generate enough electricity to fulfill the demand of nearly 48,000 homes, is equipped with nearly 2.3 million First Solar thin-film PV modules.

Southern Company chairman, president and CEO Thomas A. Fanning said that the company is building for America’s energy future – and solar is an important part of its continued effort to provide clean, safe, reliable and affordable power.

"Completing the Campo Verde Solar Facility helps us strategically incorporate more renewables into our diverse energy portfolio," Fanning added.

Under the 20 years of power purchase agreement, the output of the plant will be sold to San Diego Gas & Electric Company.
