FracPure Mobile Water Treatment Systems has been designed to remove all contaminants from frac water and return 80% of flowback, into water distillate for re-use on the drilling sites, or discharge into the environment.

The remaining 20% is concentrated salt brine, which will be treated at FracPure Centralized Treatment Plants, yielding distilled water and salt products for use in water softening, erosion control and de-icing of roads.

FracPure water management system is claimed to reduce water supply costs by creating new sources, eliminate trucking costs with on-site treatment and recycling, and cut plant operation costs by creating commercially sold salt products.

The first unit using Aquatech’s evaporation technology and approved by Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is expected to be operational and serve the natural gas industry in January 2011.

The Pennsylvania DEP deputy secretary of office of water management, John Hines said that this is the first frac wastewater treatment system that has been successfully demonstrated for the treatment of Marcellus Shale frac wastewater.
