The government stated that the electricity generation in the UK has witnessed an increase by 19% during the previous year.

According to the data presented in the annual Digest of UK Energy Statistics, the generation of electricity from offshore wind increased by 46%, while it was 17% from onshore wind.

Commenting on the report, RenewableUK deputy chief executive Maf Smith said the report has come at the end of a busy period for wind and has witnessed the opening of the largest offshore wind farm in the world at London Array, along with other key onshore projects.

"With wind generating around half of electricity from renewables we are leading the charge in the race to decarbonise our electricity market.

"These figures also show that as a country we are becoming increasingly dependent on expensive imported fossil fuels, with a rise to over 40% in the amount we depend on fossil fuels brought in from abroad. This yet again shows the need to continue to build on the success we have seen in renewables as a way of helping us achieve energy independence," added Smith.

RenewableUK noted that approximately 11.3% of the country’s total electricity generation came from renewable sources.
