The permanent magnet motor for the Spark EV features a unique design for the accurate delivery of power. It will produce 130 hp (100KW) and 400 lb-ft of torque to deliver acceleration of less than 8 seconds from 0 to 60 mph.
Commenting on the launch, General Motors Vehicle Electrification Engineering executive director Larry Nitz said that the development and manufacturing of electric motor is a key area the company has mastered, as it aims at meeting the consumer demand for electric vehicle needs.
General Motors Baltimore Operations plant manager Bill Tiger said, "The motor design was created by American engineers and it’s being manufactured and assembled by American workers.
"By designing electric motors in Michigan and manufacturing them at Baltimore Operations, GM controls the design, materials and production processes, as well as reducing costs and improving performance, quality, reliability and manufacturability."
The Spark EV will be available for sale in California and Oregon in summer 2013 and sales will further expand to Canada, Europe and South Korea.
