The commissioning of the unit is a part of engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract awarded to Bhel through an international competitive bidding by Karnataka Power Corporation (KPCL) for the Bellary project.

As part of the contract, Bhel has already commissioned two thermal units, each with a capacity of 500MW, at the Bellary power station located in Kudatini Village, Bellary District.

To date, Bhel has commissioned 3,210MW of thermal units in the state which account for 94% of the coal-based installed capacity of KPCL.

The company is also under contracts to build a 1600MW supercritical thermal power project at Yeramarus as well as the 370MW gas-based Yelahanka combined cycle power project (CCPP).

Said to be KPCL’s first gas-based power plant, the Yelahanka CCPP is in an advanced stage of commissioning for Raichur Power Corporation, a joint venture company between Bhel and KPCL.

The Yelahanka CCPP will feature a fuel efficient advanced class gas turbine.

Earlier, Bhel has also commissioned two units of 660MW each at Barh super thermal power station in Bihar, one 660MW unit each at Bara and Lalitpur in Uttar Pradesh and two 800MW boilers at Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh.
