The facility, now operational, is the first phase of the company’s larger Mesquite Solar complex.
California utility Pacific Gas & Electric will purchase the electricity produced at the project, expected to power 56,000 average American homes, under a 20-year power purchase agreement.
Commenting on the project Sempra US Gas & Power president and chief executive officer Jeffrey W. Martin said that the company will now turn its focus to developing the remaining 4000acre solar complex.
"This accomplishment puts us solidly on track to own and operate more than 1,000 megawatts of renewable energy capacity by the end of this year," added Martin.
Construction of the facility began in June 2011 providing employment to 450 workers over the course of its development.
Arizona Governor Jan Brewer lauded the state for its leadership in production of clean and renewable solar energy.
"I am thrilled to see our great state at the forefront of this promising industry and I look forward to Arizona continuing to establish itself as our nation’s solar capital," said Brewer.
The Mesquite Solar complex when fully constructed will have a total installed capacity of 700MW.
