The country’s Dams Implementation Unit oversaw the expansion process which included the increasing of the dam’s height by 10m and its length by 12kms, at a total cost of $441.5m.

This expansion increased the reservoir’s storage capacity from 3 billion cubic meters to 7.5 billion cubic meters besides improving power generation at the Merowe hydroelectric project, reported the hydroworld.com.

Execution of the project was carried out by the China International Water & Electric Corporation with the support of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries.
