The two concentrating solar power plants are part of the 28 projects announced by the South Africa Department of Energy earlier this week with the objective of generating 17,800MW renewable energy by 2030.
Proposed to be located in the Northern Cape Province the projects will have a combined storage capacity of five hours that can be used during transient periods and after sunset.
Energy generated from the two plants will be purchased by Eskom under a long term power purchase agreement.
Abengoa will be responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the plants besides having a 51% ownership stake in the projects.
Industrial Development Corporation with a 29% stake and Black Economic Empowerment with a 20% are the other partners in the program.
