The initial contract of the project’s first phase, worth about £450,000, included the proposal to set up 86 turbines of 1MW capacity each.
Turbines will come up between Caithness on the Scottish mainland and Island of Stroma, which is about 1.1km2 away from the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth, off the north coast of Scotland.
In July 2012, MeyGen submitted offshore marine license application and onshore planning application for the first phase, supported by the Environmental Statement (ES) to Marine Scotland and the Highland Council, outcome of which is expected in April 2013.
According to the company, the generated electricity from the project will be transmitted to the national grid.
MeyGen Environment and Consents manager Ed Rollings said, "The relationship with the Xodus project team throughout the whole EIA process has been exceptional and they have produced an Environmental Statement that everyone involved can be very proud of."
