The funding is part of the agency’s $30m nationwide campaign to reduce carbon emissions from diesel-powered vehicles.
California is the biggest recipient of the funding, with the state’s environment agency securing $5m while Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Connecticut Maritime Foundation received $1.39 million and $800,000 in grants respectively under the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA).
The EPA also awarded over $100,000 to the Pacific Territories under the same initiative wherein state’s and their organizations are required to purchase and install new diesel marine engines to diminish reliance on vehicles that contribute to pollutants in the environment.
Commenting on the funding EPA New England Office regional administrator Curt Spalding remarked that reducing diesel emissions is known to markedly improve air quality.
"Investing in Clean Diesel projects in New England will protect people’s health, improve air quality and help our economy by keeping jobs here in our communities," Spalding said.
