The funding will be provided under EPA’s diesel emission reduction program (DERP) and will replace, retrofit or repower older diesel-powered engines like marine vessels, locomotives, trucks and buses.

Older Diesel-powered engines that predate cleaner standards are known to emit large amounts of air pollutants, such as nitrogen oxide and particulate matter which in turn leads to asthma, lung and heart disease and premature deaths and the EPA is looking to address over 11 million older engines

The program has been in place since 2005 with the agency awarding over 500 grants nationwide.
