According to a document from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, the companies have together invested a combined KRW605.9 billion in the past three years.

Considering returns on the recent 3-year investment, the 9 firms will raise their investment by 5 times for renewable energy supply, the document said.

With the expanded investment, renewable energy output will account for around 1.7 pct of total power capacity, from less than 1 percent currently.

South Korea on Monday said it would invest 107 trillion won, or 2 percent of its annual GDP, in environment-related industries over the next five years, although it did not specify how it would fund the investment.

South Korean Capital, Seoul said that it aimed to raise KRW2.0 trillion from the private sector and increase fiscal and financial aid to help green industries.
