The ban will take effect from February 2013 for all supermarkets and establishments covering over 10,000ft2 of retail space and from June 2013 for establishments below 10,000ft2 of retail space.

A similar ban exists in the Los Angeles County with neighboring cities such as Santa Monica, Malibu, Calabasas and Long Beach enacting similar laws.

The ordinance also specifies that paper bags to be used will be required to contain 40% post-consumer recycled content and will preclude farmers and drycleaners.
