Karaha Bodas is a joint project between Pertamina Geothermal, PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) and the Karaha Bodas Company.

Abadi Poernomo, president director Pertamina Geothermal, “The project will be funded by a corporate loan, from Pertamina to its subsidiary [PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy – PGE).”

Abadi said Pertamina Geothermal had completed the feasibility study and the Karaha Bodas project should be operational in 2013.

Abadi said “The power plant will have a 30 megawatts capacity, but open for capacity expansion if needed”.

PLN’s second-phase 10,000 megawatt (MW) power generation crash program includes Karaha Bodas project.

Projects which are under the first 10,000 MW program belong to PLN, but the second 10,000 MW program also comprise of projects with independent power producers (IPPs).

The project capability of the second program will be around 9,963 MW. The IPPs are projected to produce around 40% of this total capability.

The first-phase program was opened in 2006 to meet power scarcity and raising demand for electricity countrywide, chiefly for the Java-Bali system.

Geothermal energy will have a vital part in the second phase of the crash program.

Geothermal energy is anticipated to power around half of the projects in the second phase program. Hydro-power will comprise for 1,174 MW, with coal and gas providing the rest 4,056 MW.

Abadi said Pertamina Geothermal will sell power from Karaha Bodas to PLN.

“But we haven’t [yet] had a negotiation with PLN concerning the rate” Abadi added.
