The contract has been awarded by China National Electric Engineering which is developing the project along with Sinohydro.

Under the contract, Alstom will deliver four 175MW Francis turbine-generator sets and associated equipment for the 700MW project.

Alstom Hydro China will provide equipment design, manufacturing, supervision to the installation, commissioning, testing and site services.

The Zungeru plant, which is claimed to be largest hydropower project in Nigeria, is being built on the middle and upper reaches of River Kaduna.

It will contribute to the area’s social and economic growth by meeting local flood protection, irrigation and shipping needs.

Alstom Renewable Energies hydro senior vice president Yves Rannou said: "Zungeru is one of several hydro projects that are part of Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Master Plan.

"Winning this project is another fruitful result from a strong and long-term cooperation with our Chinese partners. It further consolidates Alstom’s leading position in Africa’s hydropower market and paves the way to further successes."

About 13% of Nigeria’s total electricity generation currently comes from renewable energy sources.

Under its Renewable Energy Master Plan (REMP), the country plans to increase the share of renewable power such as wind, solar, biomass and small hydro to 23% in 2025 and 36% by 2030.
