Situated 120km off the Yorkshire coast, the wind farm will cover about 407km². It will generate enough energy for around 800,000 homes in the UK.
If the order goes ahead, 171 of Siemens 7MW turbines will be installed at the project’s site. Dong plans to make a final investment decision on the wind farm in the second half of next year.
Once built, Hornsea Project One will almost double the capacity of the London Array wind farm to become the largest offshore wind farm in the world, the company said.
Dong Energy Wind Power senior vice president Mats Vikholm said: "Our decision to make Siemens the preferred supplier for our Hornsea Project One wind farm is a crucial step in our efforts to lower cost of electricity.
"The 7 MW turbine is an upgrade of the 6 MW platform which we know very well from Westermost Rough in the UK and Gode Wind 1+2 in Germany. Larger and more cost efficient wind turbines are key to reach our strategic target of reducing cost of electricity from offshore wind to 100 €/MWh in 2020."
Dong Energy will also use Siemens turbines at Race Bank and Walney Extension Phase 2 projects in the UK.
Siemens will supply 91 of its 6MW direct drive turbines for the 580MW Race Bank wind power plant, which will be built about 32km off the British eastern coast. It will cover an area of 62km².
The company will deliver 7MW turbines for the 330MW Walney Extension phase 2. The contract is subject to Dong making a final investment decision.
