Virginia Solar subsidiary Pacifico Energy is developing the Hosoe plant on 140ha of land in Miyazaki prefecture.

The plant, which is expected to start operations in the spring of 2018, will generate enough energy for about 30,000 homes and reduce 68,200 tons of CO2 emissions per year.

A group of Japanese banks led by the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ will provide a total of JPY35bn ($291m) in loans.

Trina Solar will supply about 300,000 PV modules for the plant, which is being built by Toyo Engineering.

Asahi Dengyo is providing operations and maintenance services for the project. GE is supplying 50 units of 1.26MW Brilliant solar inverters.

Kyushu Electric Power will buy the energy generated from the plant under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

Pacifico Energy president Kazuomi Kaneto said: "We are excited about partnering again with GE on Japan’s third largest solar power plant, and the largest in the country which is invested 100 percent by foreign financial institutions."

GE Energy Financial Services managing director and head of Asia Pacific Sushil Verma said: "We aim to continue helping Japan achieve a diversified power mix. Working with reliable and regional counterparties supports our international expansion and renewable energy investment commitments."

Hosoe is the fourth Japan solar project in which GE Energy Financial Services has invested since May 2014.
