Located in Surry County, Virginia, the power plant comprises two nuclear units capable of powering 419,000 homes. The first unit was commissioned in 1972 followed by the second unit in 1973.

In 2003, the power plant secured approval from the NRC for extending the operating licenses for both reactors from 40 to 60 years. The licenses of the two units are currently scheduled to expire in 2032 and 2033 respectively.

The company is now planning to further extend the operating life of the Unit 1 and 2 to 2052 and 2053 respectively.

Dominion Generation business unit CEO David Christian said: "The operation of Surry positions Virginia for economic growth. It supports more than 950 high-paying jobs at the station and produces additional economic and tax benefits."

"And, Surry – like the nation’s other 61 nuclear stations – provides the backbone for the nation’s carbon-free power generation.

"In the case of Surry, it produces 20% of the electricity used in Virginia. Its continued operation could assist in meeting and maintaining the state’s goals for lowering carbon emissions."

The license renewal application, however, is subject to approval of the company’s board of directors.
